McIntyre is located approximately four miles from
Irwinton, the county seat. The city was developed in the mid-nineteenth century as a result of a new train station depot being placed by the Central of Georgia Railroad along Commissioner Creek and took its name from the station's first agent. The original house and depot of the McIntyre station was erected on a few hundred acres of land owned by the railroad.
