Senior Citizen Center
The Wilkinson County Senior Citizen Center is a place where seniors, those who are at least 60 years of age, can come to socialize, reflect, and enjoy good times. The WCSC offers a safe environment where seniors social and personal issues may be addressed and resolved.
The Senior Center staff works with the Wilkinson County Health Department, Sherriff Department, Georgia Legal Services, Volunteer Macon, other Seniors Centers and all Wilkinson County Department and officers to deliver services to Wilkinson County Seniors.
The Senior provides services in the following:
- Health/Medical. The Senior Center staff coordinates the Wilkinson County Meals-on-Wheels Program to ensure that elderly citizens who are homebound received a nutritious meal five days a week. Staff bring in speakers using handouts and hands-on demonstration to education seniors about nutrition education. The Senior Center provides a flue shot clinic and other important immunizations. Health fairs are coordinated with Georgia College School of Nursing and with Middle Georgia State University students. In these fairs, seniors have their blood pressure, blood sugar, height, and weight checked.
- Legal. Through the use of Georgia Legal Services, the seniors have access to legal services that may assist in writing wills, Power-Of-Attorneys and Medical Power-Of-Attorneys.
- Social. The Senior Center provides plenty of opportunities to socialize and have fun. Birthday celebrations are held for participating seniors. Arts and crafts, such as needlepoint, quilting, and knitting are done weekly. The seniors play games such as Bingo, Checkers, and others on a weekly basis. On Friday, the seniors watch movies together. Once a month on Thursday, the seniors converge upon Thompson Cove for an evening dinner together. There are periodic visits to neighboring Twiggs County Senior Center where planned activities for Halloween and a Valentines Dance are coordinated. The Senior Center works with the Wilkinson County Service Center to hold an annual prom. The seniors attend Senior Day Expo held annually in Perry, Georgia. Throughout the year, the seniors go shopping locally and within a 50-mile radius.
- Spiritual. The Senior Center staff coordinates Bible Study/devotion with participating seniors every other Friday. Ladies from the Reynolds Temple Church of God in Christ Women’s Ministry come out and minister to the social needs of the seniors.
