Tax Assessors Office

The Tax Assessor’s office is responsible for the maintenance of real property and non-homesteaded mobile home records, including transfers of ownership, mailing addresses of owners, and county tax maps. This office also administers records of personal property subject to taxation, which includes persons, firms, and corporations. On an annual basis and in accordance with state law, the Tax Assessor’s office is responsible for preparing and certifying the digest, which contains individual property assessments, to the State Revenue Commissioner.

The Tax Assessor’s office must furnish each taxing jurisdiction within the county with an annual official digest.

NOTICE TO ALL TAXPAYERS: PURSUANT TO OCGA48-5-311 – As a result of Wilkinson County having more than 3% of their total digest under appeal for 2016 this shall serve as notice that the Board of Assessors has an additional 180 days to respond to appeals.

PUBLIC NOTICE  : THIS IS TO SERVE PUBLIC NOTICE THAT THE WILKINSON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HAS ADOPTED A “TIMBER HARVESTING NOTIFICATION ORDINANCE”.  AS OF APRIL 1, 2009 ANY INDIVIDUAL OR COMPANY THAT IS ENGAGED IN HARVESTING  OF TIMBER IN WILKINSON COUNTY, GEORGIA WILL BE REQUIRED TO NOTIFY THE WILKINSON COUNTY TAX ASSESSORS OFFICE OF THEIR INTENT TO HARVEST TIMBER IN WILKINSON COUNTY, GEORGIA. THIS NOTIFICATION MAY BE DONE IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER:

ANY TIMBER HARVESTING CONTRACTOR SHALL GIVE 48 HOURS TELEPHONE NOTICE OR 3 DAY WRITTEN NOTIFICATION, VIA EMAIL, FIRST CLASS MAIL OR IN PERSON TO THE WILKINSON COUNTY TAX ASSESSORS OFFICE, OF WHERE TREES READY TO BE HARVESTED ARE STANDING PRIOR TO HARVESTING SAID TREES.

THIS TIMBER HARVESTING NOTIFICATION IS PROVIDED FOR BY THE OFFICIAL CODE OF GEORGIA ANNOTATED, SECTION 12-6-24.

A COPY OF THE TIMBER HARVESTING NOTIFICATION ORDINANCE MAY BE OBTAINED AT THE WILKINSON COUNTY TAX ASSESSORS OFFICE.

THIS IS TO SERVE AS PUBLIC NOTICE TO THE CITIZENS OF WILKINSON COUNTY, GEORGIA: 

As of April 1, 2009 Wilkinson County will require building permit to be issued on all construction in the unincorporated areas of the county.  Construction is defined as an improvement to land, including but not limited to residential homes, commercial buildings, industrial buildings, rooms, garages, bath houses, barns, decks, picnics shelters, storage buildings, in ground pools and telecommunications, but does not include remodeling or other work performed in the interior of an existing structure.  A Construction Permit shall be issued if the construction is consistent with the applicable laws and ordinances of Wilkinson County.  The Construction Permit shall be obtained prior to the start of construction.  The cost of the Construction Permit shall be $25.00. This permit will be issued in the Tax Assessor’s Office.


Senate Bill 346 and your new Notice of Assessment

This Senate Bill charged the Assessor’s Office with mailing out assessment notices annually. We also have to provide the taxpayer with an estimate of the taxes; this estimate will be made with the prior year’s millage rate.  It is designed to be more open for the taxpayer and give the taxpayer an annual notice to review and appeal their assessment if needed.

It also charged the counties to use a uniform assessment notice that is the same in all 159 counties, as well as a uniform appeal form that can be obtained from our office or the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website. You may still appeal in writing by letter within the 45 day time frame. You can now choose to take your appeal to the Board of Equalization, Arbitration or before a Hearing Officer.

The Board of Assessors is charged with the responsibility of locating, identifying, and appraising all real and personal property as well as non-homestead mobile homes in Wilkinson County at its just and fair valuation, on an annual basis, and for ensuring that all valuations between the individual taxpayers are fairly and justly equalized in accordance with state law and administrative procedures.

The Board is constituted of five qualified assessors who are certified by the State Revenue Commissioner. The Chief Appraiser is the administrative head of the department with the added responsibilities of receiving tax returns and exemption applications. The Chief Appraiser also receives applications for the Wilkinson County homestead exemption.
